The origins of Reiki
A Japanese practice that travelled around the world.
The form of Reiki most widely practised today traces its lineage to Mikao Usui in early twentieth-century Japan. His students continued the practice, and the work of Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata played a central role in its journey from Japan to Hawaii and the wider Western world.
The founder
Mikao Usui
Mikao Usui was born in Japan in 1865. The memorial erected by his students describes a lifelong interest in learning and spiritual discipline, including the study of history, medicine, psychology, Buddhist texts, and other philosophical traditions.
In 1922, following a period of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama, Usui began developing and sharing the system that became known as Usui Reiki Ryoho. He established a society and teaching centre in Tokyo, where people came to learn the practice and receive sessions.
Reiki has developed through many lineages, so some details and interpretations differ between traditions. This overview follows the commonly documented Usui–Hayashi–Takata lineage.

The beginning
Usui establishes his practice in Tokyo
After his experience on Mount Kurama, Usui explored the practice with himself and his family before deciding to share it more widely. In April 1922, he opened a centre in the Aoyama area of Tokyo and began teaching his method.
- 1925
The next generation
Chujiro Hayashi studies with Usui
Chujiro Hayashi became one of Usui's students and went on to teach and practise Reiki in his own clinical setting. His approach became an important link between the original Japanese practice and the form that would later travel overseas.
- 1930s
Reiki reaches Hawaii
Hawayo Takata learns from Hayashi
Hawaii-born Hawayo Takata learned Reiki from Hayashi in Japan during the 1930s. She returned to Hawaii in 1937, and Hayashi initiated her as a Reiki Master in 1938. Takata then practised, taught, and established clinics in Hawaii.

A worldwide practice
Reiki spreads throughout the West
Takata taught across the United States and trained a new generation of Reiki Masters. Their students carried the practice into many countries, and distinct schools and styles gradually developed from the shared Usui lineage.
